Colloquium Lecture "Dare to do great things", Artur B. Chmielewski, 18.05.2023
During the lecture, the speaker will present how NASA decides where to send future missions and where Polish contribution can be.
Artur B. Chmielewski works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. At NASA, Artur has done just about every job imaginable: building scientific instruments, nuclear generators, testing spacecraft parts, and working on 15 NASA missions to explore the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and asteroids. Arthur has led 4 missions with budgets exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars, the last of which was a comet landing. Arthur has established a technology lab to build telescopes to observe black holes in space and take pictures of planets orbiting other stars - a challenging task considering such a telescope would be the size of the National Stadium.
Outside engineering and science, Arthur has consulted on movies in Hollywood, worked with artists on space art, and worked with American Indians to incorporate science words into the Navajo language. Arthur also loves working with young people, helping startups, organizing science clubs for high schools, and research projects for universities.
His new book, co-authored with Ewelina Zambrzycka, titled "Odważ się robić wielkie rzeczy" (dare to do great things) will be published in May 2023.
The lecture is held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 4:15 pm in room 134 of the WUT Main Building.
